Why It sucks now[edit | edit source]

  1. The main problem of the site is that they started bad actions near to the end of 2018 and much worse since 2022, causing the site lose it's popularity
  2. Cyberbullying is rampant, and Tumblr does a very poor job preventing it. One of the most common circumstances being Tumblr's askbox system, which allows anyone to anonymously leave comments even without registering and can even leave an open window for bullying and harassment.
  3. Back in the mid-2017, they had a safe mode. Many people have complained about this since many appropriate photos/drawings (ducks, sandwiches, the sky, etc.) have been censored thanks to the lack of human moderation. It also does not help that some work-in-progress drawings get caught in the crossfire. Users under 18 cannot turn this off.
  4. The mobile version suffered from many bugs, mostly the profiles. Your profile would have an incorrect avatar and/or background, or your avatar would just be solid black.
  5. In November 2018, the Tumblr app was removed from the iOS app store. Apparently child pornography was caught being distributed on the site and the staff didn't take action despite numerous reports from users. After the app was removed, Tumblr blacklisted NSFW results from appearing in anyone's search and began taking down random blogs who didn't do anything wrong.
  6. In December 17, 2018, they announced that they were purging all NSFW blogs. They marked many clean things as NSFW, causing many users to abandon that site in favor of other sites like Twitter, as well as some Tumblr alternatives/clones such as newTumbl. It doesn't help the fact the new community guidelines are banning "female-presenting nipples"
  7. The app has very poor moderation and isn’t very polished.
  8. Starting from March 2022, Tumblr now has a login wall that won't let you go for more posts in hashtags and archives in blogs, but lately in blogs that have a new design and doesn't have a Tumblr theme since 2023. It doesn't happen in blogs that had a theme. This update can be kinda ironic since Tumblr's askbox does not force anonymous users to log in
  9. Speaking of the log in wall, more blogs that are formerly not requiring an account to view are being now blocked and forced to log to view by bots
  10. As of mid-2024, when you go on a hashgtag or explore when using a extension to block the log in wall, it will go back to the start. Even worse in the hashtags where you see a post from a blog that requires an account to view is disappeared from the results
