Log in pop-ups or obligatory sign up are a type of features where sites forces you to create an account to see more or the site doesn't allow anonymous people to do anything. While these sites have a lot of users or less if they lowered the popularity after years, sites that feature log in pop-ups have still been critized by anonymous people and critics

Thought common, as of mid-2010s, several websites which are social media have begun using log in pop-ups such as Facebook and Pinterest, and spreaded more to other sites in the late-2010s and early 2020s. This led to a controversy over the future of websites, since this made various websites "Log in to continue" : many websites intentionally lock content behind log in walls and make it too difficult for the user to browse otherwise in order to force to keep them

Notable examples[edit | edit source]

  • Facebook used to have log in pop-up back in the mid-2010s when you see more comments on a post or else content that have. This also appears as a pop-up wall with a X button in it. Another case when you go some hashtags or profiles, you are forced to create an account
  • Pinterest is a notorious example when you scroll for more things and the wall appears for unlogged users, but also can scroll more deeper with the wall without X button in it. Lately, this also appears with a "X" button when you go to a pin
  • Quora has a wall for unlogged users after the third or fourth page or question
  • Instagram has a login wall after browsing certain content on hashtags and profiles, this also appears with a X button when you want to see more comments
  • Twitter used to have a non-stop log in pop-up with a "X" when you go post or see the picture, comments and later in 2022 after limited scrolling in the profile, and again in 2023 when you go to hashtags
  • Tiktok in the mobile version appears after browsing certain videos or when you are seeing the content. This can also apply to the desktop version when you click the video few times, and also starting in 2024, Tiktok doesn't allow you to browse anonymously with a log in wall without X button in the desktop version
  • Tumblr has a wall with text and sometimes with animation that can change over the months after scrolling for more blogs or posts
  • VK.com the russian equivalent to Facebook doesn't allow you to go hashtag or anything else in the desktop version, instead you are obligated to create an account, this also occurs when you browse after certain content with the pop-up log in that have "X" in it, both in the mobile and desktop version
  • Linkedin has a case similar to Facebook when you go a profile

Why they don't allow you unless you log in[edit | edit source]

  1. Since many websites that are social media or others uses it, and most websites are focused on making even more money as opposed to improving their site
  2. They are similar to microtransactions in videogames, but instead with log in walls
  3. In some websites, the site forces you to sign up when you visit instead of scrolling the limit which is more worse than after browsing certain things
  4. There are websites that tries to forces users to log in that redirects you to a page such as Instagram, VK,
  5. Some websites tries hard to be annoying such as Tumblr log in wall
  6. This shows that not everyone can create an account because many people using these sites or because of waste of time to create an account. Those log in pop-ups and enforcement most likely are only there to milk more money.
  7. Some sites banned logged users for violation a policy for no reason given to them, making it ironic
  8. This was one of the main reasons why some websites over the years started to create it, thanks to the infamous Pinterest popularizing the method
  9. Not only social media sites but also some sites to watch movies, game websites such as iWin and the list goes on
