The Commentary Community is a community on YouTube that mostly consists of YouTubers who make commentary videos about various topics, either rants, essays or critiques, or history. The community used to be respected, but since 2016, the commentary community has slowly degraded and became one of the worst communities ever.
Why It Sucks Now[edit | edit source]
- Ever since LeafyIsHere became incredibly popular, a lot of YouTubers decided to copy his style (using a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (or other games) gameplay while talking about certain topics or just rambling and ranting, as well making fun), which ended up plaguing the community, to the point that they ended up being unoriginal.
- Rather than focusing on constructive criticism, these YouTubers often just maliciously bully people for relatively trivial reasons, which comes off as harassment and bullying, which violates YouTube's TOS.
- Tons of bad commentary YouTubers, such as Prison Mate Luke, Turkey Tom, DaftPina, Jalyn, illuminaughtii, Keemstar (DramaAlert) and so on, and the commentary channels that used to be good ended up going downhill during this era, such as H3H3 Productions (Ethan Klein) (more specifically in 2018).
- They target people such as streamers and left-wing people for relatively trivial reasons, just to profit or because they think they're pathetic. A great example is Acheeto, when he made fun of a prominent member of BreadTube (a left-wing YouTube group) called Noah Samsen, by taking tweets and his videos out of context. Noah himself responded with a video titled "Dissecting a YouTube Reactionary", which was positively received.
- Many people also milk criticism of Pokimane, which started back in 2020, for the sake monetization. While to be fair, Pokimane deserved it to some extent due to her abusing the copyright system to silence criticism back in 2019 and 2020, it's still harsh.
- Deceptive editing, where they hide some info they found and to make that person look worse.
- Excessive use of clickbait.
Redeeming Qualities[edit | edit source]
- There are still plenty of good commentary channels, such as penguinz0/MoistCr1TiKaL (even though he's mostly a streamer), SunnyV2, Pyrocynical, diesel patches, sensitive soci3ty, SomeOrdinaryGamers (Mutahar), The Right Opinion and so on.
- Some of the videos use the documentary style, and they're really done and unique.
