Rotten Websites Wiki:Discussion on this wiki's possible adoption on wheels

From Rotten Websites Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Due to the relative inactivity of Mar8122, this wiki's only bureaucrat, I am starting this discussion about the possibility of me adopting this wiki (receiving bureaucrat and administrator permissions from a ShoutWiki staff member instead of a bureaucrat). I am aware that adopting a wiki on ShoutWiki may take months depending on when a staff member is available, and that the bureaucrat may return in the meantime; regardless of whether I get administrator rights, I will try to carry out my plan to help this wiki (outlined below) wherever I am able to.

Issues this wiki is facing[edit source]

As of July 2023, there are several issues with this wiki that need to be corrected:

  1. There is an abundance of spam due to an inactive administration. Mar8122 is only active every few months, and the rest of the administration has been inactive for years.
  2. I've seen several pages criticizing Internet users/communities; while there's nothing wrong with such pages if they constructively criticize users with reliable evidence, most of these are unsourced; this is also a problem with pages criticizing websites to a lesser degree.
  3. Many pages that just nitpick instead of providing constructive criticism. This is/was a problem on many other reception wikis.

What I will do to fix these issues[edit source]

If I become a bureaucrat/administrator, I will do the following to ensure that the issues I outlined above are fixed:

  1. Create an abuse filter that will stop spambot accounts from being created; specifically, I'll use a filter that I adapted from another wiki that I implemented for Tiresome Wikis Wiki, which used to have spambots attempting to target it, but doesn't anymore. Additionally, since this wiki allows anonymous editing, I will create an abuse filter to filter anonymous link spam as well.
  2. Hold a discussion on whether pages about users should be included in this wiki, as strictly speaking, "Rotten Websites Wiki" implies that this wiki only covers bad websites.
  3. Implement stricter quality control in this wiki that will reduce the amount of nitpicky and unsourced pages.

Other things that I will do as an administrator[edit source]

Here are other things that aren't strictly necessary, but that I'd like to do to help improve this wiki even more:

  1. Add some CSS styling and a logo for this wiki, as right now it's looking a little bland.
  2. Improve the main page, as it's looking too simple currently; this could probably be changed to a Qualitipedia-inspired design, like what I've implement in Tiresome Wikis Wiki and its sister wiki, Creative Wikis Wiki.
  3. Remove any inactive admins; inactive admins do nothing but clutter the admin list.

Discussion[edit source]

This is the designated section to discuss this plan and suggest how to improve it.

The second reason is one of the main reasons why I want to adopt the wiki. I want to take control of it so I could put sources on them, and remove garbage pages that have nothing to do with it CJWorldGame32125 (talk) 10:06, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

Yeah, this wiki seriously needs adoption. After all, we don't want spambots to kill it like they did Weirdcyclopedia. SuperStreetKombat (talk) 11:01, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

I think there should be users on the wiki, including communities, Roblox games should be here also (if Garbage Roblox Games Wiki gets shutdown/closed) and including Discord servers. I think the new name of this website should be called "Rotten Internet Wiki" for a great idea (Depends on your choice). Who will agree with me?

Pages of internet users, communities, and discord servers should be allowed as long as it's not too toxic/hateful.

I decided to give Tali64^2 adminship. I appreciated that you all do care for this wiki. It's not for me unless I feel like it. But I have made my mind. Mar8122 (talk) 03:52, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
